FC Barcelona has always been the home of some of the best footballers in every era. Amazing players from all parts of the world have contributed to making the Catalan club one of the best in Europe, and Camp Nou remains one of the most favored destinations for top footballers.
This was particularly the case with two of the most high-profile signings that Barcelona have made in the last two years. Last year, Robert Lewandowski withstood a lot of pressure from Bayern Munich to sign for Barcelona, and this year, Ilkay Gundogan has joined him at the Catalan club after resisting the insistence of Pep Guardiola and other Manchester City executives to stay with the Citizens.
Lewandowski and Gundogan receive awards in Germany
These two players are undoubtedly among the best in the world, and, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, they were recognized as such at the SportBILD gala in Germany this Monday.
Ilkay Gundogan was chosen as the best German player in the last year. This award recognized his performances and achievements with Manchester City, with whom Gundogan won every trophy that the Premier League side was competing for.
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski was recognized as one of the legends of the Bundesliga, on the 60th anniversary of the top German league. He shared this recognition with other star names to have played in Germany, including, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Thomas Muller, Matthias Sammer, Lothar Matthaus, and Felix Magath.
Lewandowski and Gundogan comment on this event
Having received this award, Lewandowski took to his social media to express how much this recognition meant to him:
“It’s a privilege to be recognized alongside legends like Wolfgang Overath, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Matthias Sammer, Felix Magath, Lothar Matthaus, and Thomas Muller, and even more so to be the only foreigner in this group. Playing in the Bundesliga will always be a significant part of my life. Thanks to everyone for the congratulations; it was an unforgettable day!”
Meanwhile, Gundogan also talked about how Lewandowski had played a part in convincing him to come to Barcelona this summer:
“In my conversation with Lewandowski before coming to Barcelona, his eyes lit up when he talked about the club. He assured me that it was the right decision.”
Both these players will be key as Xavi fights to defend the La Liga title this season and go as far as possible in the UEFA Champions League. Lewandowski has not started the season in his best shape, and Xavi and the club will be hoping he can get into his best form as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Gundogan has been sharper, as he created the first goal against Cadiz with Pedri.
