Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso

Barcelona veteran not too keen to join Manchester United – report

FC Barcelona are working to conclude a number of operations in the remaining days of the summer transfer window. In addition to the arrival of Joao Cancelo, and the potential inclusion of Joao Felix to the squad, the Catalans are also looking to offload several players.

The main candidates to leave the club in the coming days are Clement Lenglet, Ez Abde, and Eric Garcia. The Frenchman is not in the plans of Xavi and the Catalans have been trying to offload him throughout the summer, while Abde and Garcia are deemed crucial by Xavi but their demand in the market can seduce the Blaugranes to sell them and get some much-needed funds.

Barcelona open for Alonso’s exit

In recent days, there has been another addition to these potential candidates for an exit from the club, as Marcos Alonso is going to see his importance for Xavi’s squad decrease this season. The Spaniard was expected to play a secondary but important role, being the substitute for Alejandro Balde on the left-back spot this season.

However, FC Barcelona are close to the signing of Joao Cancelo, who can play on both the flanks. Cancelo has already proven himself to be a worthy left-back under Pep Guardiola, and while his primary position at Barcelona would be that of a right-back, he can also fill in for Balde when the need arises.

Thus, with Cancelo’s arrival, Marcos Alonso would not be as indispensable for Xavi’s plans this season as he was going to be. Furthermore, his wages are going to be significantly higher this season, as he had taken a pay cut to join the Catalan club last summer.

Alonso does not want to join Manchester United

In such a context, Manchester United have shown an interest in the defender for a loan this season. Owing to the previously mentioned reasons, Barcelona are highly receptive to this offer, and can allow the veteran defender to leave in the coming days.

However, journalist Luis Rojo now reports that Marcos Alonso does not want to go to Manchester United this summer. Further details on his choice are yet to be received, and it remains to be seen why Alonso is unwilling to join the Manchester side, but it is clear that the Spaniard still has a significant demand in the Premier League, as he spent several seasons with Chelsea before moving to Barcelona last summer.
