Barcelona have their fair share of problems to deal with this season. A long injury list coupled with underperforming stars have left the Catalans wanting more. However, there are certain things that have gone their way as well during the ongoing campaign.
They remained unbeaten up until the recent game against Real Madrid. Moreover, while they certainly have not performed at their best, certain stars continue to show their worth. One such star is none other than 19-year-old Pablo Gavi.
Gavi’s performance
As highlighted by Jordi Cardero, Xavi and his coaching staff have been overjoyed by Gavi’s recent performance in an experimental role. More specifically, his ability to play as a pivot when asked to. Coupled alongside Ilkay Gundogan, he formed a formidable double-pivot that was both versatile and full of quality.
In his latest appearance against Real Madrid, Gavi played the entirety of the game. He made 38 passes with a completion rate of 90% throughout the game. Moreover, he even created a chance for his teammates.
Key defensive actions
However, his primary contributions were all mainly defensive-natured. Visibly keeping Jude Bellingham occupied, he ensured the Englishman was on his toes for the whole game. He made 3 successful tackles, one of which stopped a definite goal-scoring opportunity.
Moreover, he made 9 recoveries, while also making crucial clearances. He also won 9 duels across the match, one of which was an aerial one. He was both fouled and committed fouls several times that helped Barcelona maintain control of the game at times.
His performance did not manage to ultimately win Barcelona the game, but it could easily have done. On his own, the young Golden Boy managed to hold his ground against the Galacticos from Madrid. Moving forward this season, he will undoubtedly be crucial for Barcelona.
Even as Barcelona look for a new pivot in the coming winter market, it will be a relief to know that Xavi can count on Gavi in that role when needed.
