Xavi to talk to four players as Barcelona look to trim their squad – report

With only one match left to play, the 2022-2023 season of FC Barcelona is almost at its end. Now, the focus shifts to the summer transfer window, where one of the main objectives of the club is to sell some of its fringe players.

As there are only a few days left till the opening of the transfer window, the next week will perhaps be one of the most tragic times for Xavi at FC Barcelona.

The club and its squad are still euphoric and in celebrating mood from their La Liga triumph, but Xavi will have to take the difficult task of communicating with some of the players that the club is not going to rely on them for the next season.

There are four main players identified by Diario AS, who have a contract with the club and whom Xavi will have to break the sad news of them being on the chopping block. These players are:

Ansu Fati:

Ansu Fati’s case will be the most difficult as he has risen through the ranks at the club and is considered to be one of their own by the club and its supporters. Thus, Xavi will have to convince Fati to accept an offer from another club, as this will be in favor of both the player and the club.

Barcelona would be getting some transfer fee and get their wage bill reduced, while Fati can definitely benefit from a change of scene as his growth has been stagnant in the last few seasons.

Ferran Torres:

Ferran Torres is another player whom Xavi will be trying to convince to leave. Torres provided some good performances in his early days at the club but has gone cold since then.

The Catalan club is looking to get around €20-25 million from his sale, which would somewhat mitigate the loss on the player by one-half, as the club paid €55 million for him to City.

Franck Kessie:

While Kessie has been somewhat effective in the rare appearances he has made for the club, Xavi will still have to make him accept an offer from another club this window.

His sale would allow the club to generate a quick profit, as he was obtained for free, and can provide the club with a significant amount of money if he leaves.

Pablo Torre:

This case would not be as difficult, as the club is only looking for a loan transfer for the youngster at this moment. The coaches believe a player of Torre’s quality should not go a season without playing significant minutes at this stage of his career, and are looking for a first-division club where he can make regular appearances.

Thus, Xavi will be facing the difficult task of convincing some of the players to leave the club while they are still celebrating the league win. This will be another test for Xavi, who has mostly been successful in other aspects of his coaching career.
