The recent performances of FC Barcelona have been understandably criticized. La Blaugrana have been sluggish and unconvincing in their latest displays. However, beyond just their collective disappointments, even individual performances have been lackluster.
Many stars of the team have been performing at a lower level than what is expected of them. Whether it is due to a lack of confidence or simply a level of discomfort with the current tactical setup, there is something or the other bothering those players.
One such star was undoubtedly Alejandro Balde. The 19-year-old Spanish fullback has been struggling in recent games, but Xavi decided to entrust him with a start against Rayo Vallecano.
While it was not the best of performances, neither by him nor Barcelona as a unit, Balde reminded fans with glimpses of magic why he is as celebrated as a young talent. According to SPORT, much of the credit in this regard goes to his talks with Xavi himself.
As per the report, the recent absence that he had to face in the Spanish National team call-up gave him time to reflect. He talked extensively to Xavi and the coaching staff during this period. Brainstorming ideas and exchanging tactics allowed the youngster to have a more open view heading into this recent game.
Moreover, another factor that undoubtedly must have pushed him was Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese star showcased last time out that he is a very capable left-back as well. His performances must have finally given Balde the competition he needed to take that extra step.
While Marcos Alonso was also there before that, the veteran’s declining quality and lack of trust by Barcelona were not enough to shake Balde off his throne. However, Cancelo’s elite qualities and versatility surely have shaken the Spaniard.
