Spanish football continues to give birth to talented young midfielders. Celta de Vigo’s academy has produced an array of sublime footballers over the years, with Gabri Veiga the latest entry to make a significant name for himself. In spite of strong links with Barcelona, the prospect appears to have one foot out of La Liga.
Barcelona along with their rivals Real Madrid kept tabs on the situation of Veiga amidst his ongoing explosion. While the Catalans were reportedly far ahead of Madrid in the race to acquire the 21-year-old, Newcastle have emerged as the most likely destination for young Veiga.
According to Sport, the Magpies have inquired about the Celta Vigo sensation, following a breakthrough season by the player. It is reported that, as things stand, the agreement between the player and the British club would be incredibly close.
Newcastle’s upward trajectory makes this signing a highly plausible scenario. The English side has blossomed over the past couple of seasons, ascending to Champions League football and showcasing dominance amidst England’s elite.
The value of the Galician’s release clause is €30 million, which is a fairly reasonable sum for a club that, in the two seasons after the Saudi sovereign fund bought the club, has experienced multimillion-dollar inflation.
Considering the major financial boost, any sort of monetary constraints are unlikely to be present. This is contrary to the Catalans, who are yet to receive the green light over the Viability Plan.
Under Eddie Howe’s tutelage, Veiga is certain to continue growing. Newcastle have shown a transfer strategy of signing young players and not splashing cash solely on established superstars, which is a blueprint that worked considerably well for them. For example, the arrival of Isak and Bruno Guimaraes worked out well. In such a context, it is not hard envisioning Veiga’s future with Newcastle.
