The defeat suffered by FC Barcelona last night will be felt by the Catalan club for a long time to come. Not only did it come in a cup final that kept Barcelona from winning their first title this season, but the fact that it came at the hands of Real Madrid made this defeat particularly painful.
Real Madrid went two goals ahead in the opening 10 minutes of the game, and as Xavi commented in his press conference after the match, his team did not exactly shine on the pitch. Otherwise, world-class players like Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde had a game to forget, with none of the Barcelona players particularly standing out.
However, one player who made at least one positive contribution for Barcelona in the match was Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker scored the only goal for the Catalans in the first half and saved a shred of dignity for Barcelona.
Still, the striker understood that his and his team’s performance was nowhere near what the fans expected from them, and as SPORT has noted, took to social media to apologize to the fans for this abject display, as he wrote: “It’s not an acceptable result. The most sincere apologies to all Culés.”
While Lewandowski’s goal was not able to prevent a horrific night for Barcelona, it still had some personal significance for the Pole. Scoring in this game means Lewandowski now has scored in all the four Spanish Super Cup games he has played in Saudi Arabia.
The former Bayern Munich star scored in both games last season and repeated that feat by scoring against Osasuna and Real Madrid this season as well.
Now, he will be hoping to have a better night against Unionistas de Salamanca, as Barcelona face them this Thursday in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.
