FC Barcelona are one step closer to returning to La Liga action following the latest international break. The Catalan giants will travel to Vallecas in order to face off against Rayo Vallecano. Matchday 14 awaits both teams, as they look to fight for all the points.

Recent weeks have seen La Blaugrana decline in terms of the performances that they have put on display. Moreover, the loss of Gavi will undoubtedly add even more tension within the Barça camp.

However, the return of Frenkie De Jong will be a great boost for Xavi. Coupled with the fact that Pedri is now capable enough of starting for Barcelona once again, it is not all doom and gloom for the players and coaches of the Catalan club.

Here is how Barcelona could line up against 10th-placed Rayo Vallecano.

Goalkeeper: Inaki Pena

For the first time this season in an official game, Marc Andre Ter Stegen will likely not be available. Due to his current back discomfort, he will have to be replaced by Inaki Pena. The Spaniard gets his first opportunity of the season and will undoubtedly be eager to make the most of it.

Right-back: Joao Cancelo

The Portuguese star has been great for both club and country this season. Now that he is back with Barcelona, Xavi will rely on him to provide both offensive and defensive contributions to the team. His versatility could also prove to be key.

Centre-back: Jules Kounde

With Ronald Araujo likely to be fatigued with the recent international break and late return to Barcelona, Jules Kounde’s involvement seems probable. The Frenchman recently criticized UEFA in a controversial public statement, but he would do well to keep those matters away from his performances.

Center-back: Inigo Martinez

In what has so far been a redemption season of sorts for Inigo Martinez, the Spaniard continues to impress. Initially performing well with Barcelona, his fine form translated well with Spain. Now, he will be expected to act as that vertical line-breaker that Xavi has so desperately needed.

Left-back: Alejandro Balde

The Spanish fullback was one of the shock absentees from the National call-up. However, his form has been far from its best this season and he will be hoping to regain his prominence with Xavi first by delivering a solid performance against Rayo Vallecano.

CDM: Oriol Romeu

With Gavi injured, the options in the midfield get thinned out. Oriol Romeu will likely be patiently waiting for the return of Frenkie De Jong back into the team to help him out in ways that no midfielder can seem to crack. He will, however, need to be sharp and avoid any careless turnovers.

CM: Ilkay Gundogan

When it comes to experience, few players can watch the winning ways of Ilkay Gundogan. The German has proven time and time again that he remains an elite midfielder and a dependable star to count on. Xavi intends to do just that and hopes that the veteran can help Barcelona stay focused.

CM: Pedri

The poster child of Xavi’s Barcelona, Pedri is now well and truly back. The Spanish magician will have his proper opportunity to showcase his technical and creative powers against a formidable Rayo Vallecano side.

Right-winger: Ferran Torres

Similar to Araujo, Raphinha is also a late arrival at Barcelona after the international break. In his stead, an in-form Ferran Torres seems to be a great alternative. The Spaniard’s good form with his National team will likely be rewarded with a start by Xavi.

Centre-forward: Robert Lewandowski

Two goals in the last Barcelona game saw Lewandowski lead the Catalans to a hard-fought victory. His numbers have been inconsistent this season, but his quality remains there to be exploited. Once he finds the right foot again, Lewandowski can become irreplaceable for Barcelona.

Left-winger: Joao Felix

Unless Xavi chooses to opt for a four-man midfield, it is likely that he will stick around with Joao Felix as his starting left winger. While the Portuguese star has given strong performances, his efficiency in front of goal has been lacking. It is high time that he returns to the version of himself he showcased in his early Barça games.
